| We Need Your Help!
The Central Brevard Humane Society is in need of dedicated individuals or groups who care about the welfare of animals.
Volunteering opportunities (must be 16 years or older to participate in these programs) are available at our shelter, at our Molly Mutt Thrift Shops - located in downtown Melbourne, Merritt Island and Rockledge or as a Society Ambassador during our community outreach events.
Activities may include walking dogs, socializing cats, grooming animals, shelter beautification projects; as well as retail
help at our thrift shops and assisting with community education and adoption events. The Humane Society is always looking for volunteers with grant writing, fundraising, clerical and animal handling/obedience training experience.
All volunteers must attend our monthly Volunteer Orientation held every first Saturday of the month, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at CBHS's Shelter, located at 1020 Cox Road in Cocoa. Prior to the start of the orientation, each person must complete the Volunteer Application Packet (4 forms):
l Volunteer Application
l Volunteer Release Agreement
l Volunteer Time Agreement - Health & Safety Release
l Volunteer Orientation Attendance
* Pre-registration is required. Please wear long pants (no shorts) and closed toed shoes (no flip flops) during Volunteer Orientation.
MONTHLY CLASSES/SESSIONS
l New Volunteer Orientation (1st Saturday of the month, 9 a.m.)
Know someone who is interested in volunteering? Tell them about our volunteer orientation program (maybe they would like to come along with you and then go out to breakfast afterwards).
l Off-site Events Class (2nd Saturday of the month, 11 a.m.)
If being in the public eye, sharing our mission and showing off our adoptable pets appeals to you then this is a great class! Once you receive training in events - you get to go and see some amazing places and people. (Pre-requisite: Dog Handling Class )
l Dog Handling Class (2nd Wednesday of the month, 5:30 p.m.)
Love being a hands-on volunteer? Then this class is for you! It's more than just learning to walk a dog, it's learning how to handle the variety of canine personalities present in a shelter environment. Learn from our Kennel Manager and her staff the safety protocols and handling techniques to make you a pro (if you have taken this class before and you haven't volunteered in awhile with us - take it as a refresher course).
l Foster Info Session (bi-monthly, 5:30 p.m.)
If you've ever wondered what it might be like to foster one of our sweet shelter pets then this is the class for you. New and open to the general public, this class will share the "urgent need" we have for good foster homes. Learn about the tremendous rewards of opening your heart and your home to an animal in need. Bring your friends & family - anyone you think might be interested in learning more.
l Cat Care Class (3rd Wednesday of the month, 6 p.m.)
More than just "here kitty-kitty-kitty", this class will teach you safety protocols and enrichment techniques we use to provide loving care to all our feline residents (the cat room is just about the happiest room to be in).
l Clinic/Recovery Phase 1
This class is unique in that there is a "phase 1" and a "phase 2." It is a 2-part class. This is a one-on-one class and preference is given to vet students. If you are considering learning the medical hands-on aspect of shelter life then this is a great class, but be prepared to be put on a wait list (because of the training). Please only take this class if you are going to be able to volunteer in our clinic during the day, Monday - Saturday.
l Clinic/Recovery Phase 2
This is the second half of the clinic recovery class.
l Clinic Front Office (4th Tuesday of the month, 10:30 a.m.)
Working at the front office for the clinic is exciting and fun! If you like the medical atmosphere but would rather work with clients as they bring in their pets then this is a great opportunity. Like the recovery class, the clinics needs are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday (during the day). If you have day hours available to volunteer and working in the clinic appeals to you - this is a great class.
l Customer Service/Front Office/Admin (4th Wednesday of the month, 5:30 p.m.)
Now, here's a huge need for us! We need capable, professional, friendly volunteers to help out in the front office of the shelter. Answering phones, greeting customers, etc. This is a key position for getting animals adopted. If you believe in our mission then this class will prepare you for this prestigious position within our organization.
